All Natural Deodorants!

All Natural DeodorantsI have been really intrigued by all natural products lately. I came across a few articles about deodorants and antiperspirants that really caught my attention. So, let me first explain that there is a difference between a deodorant and an antiperspirant, but most of us use one product that serves as both. In a nutshell, deodorants help mask body odor that you may have throughout the day while an antiperspirant is meant to block your sweat. No one wants to be the victim of visible sweaty armpit marks so for most of us a deodorant with an antiperspirant is a must.

But do we really know what is happening when we use antiperspirants and do we know what ingredients are in them? Sweating is a natural process that our body goes though. It is the way our body performs a detox. Essentially sweating is a good thing. Most people affirm a good work out if they had a good sweat. Antiperspirants “plug” your armpit’s sweat glands so that the sweat does not reach the skin’s surface, thus preventing those embarrassing signs of sweat. Yes, I know that sweat marks could be super embarrassing, especially for those who sweat a lot, but “plugging” sweat inside your armpit does not seem natural or healthy.

There are un-confirmed studies that antiperspirants and deodorants can lead to kidney disease, cancer and alzheimer. The scary part of deodorants is the ingredients found in them and how they can cause issues over time. Among a few alarming ingredients found in deodorants/antiperspirants are aluminum (this is the most active ingredient in antiperspirants), parabens, propylene glycol, phthalates and triclosan. Who even knows what these ingredients are? That is a clear indication why it probably isn’t good to apply these ingredients directly to your body daily. Most people apply deodorants up to 3 times a day.

After reading about the dangers of deodorants and antiperspirants I decided to come up with my list of the best all natural deodorants.

Soap Walla Deodorant Cream $14

Le Couvent des Minimes $13.50

For Pits Sake Natural Deodorant $8

Tom’s of Maine Long Lasting Natural Deodorant $4

L’Occitane Refreshing Aromatic Deodorant $18

Fat and the Moon Deodorant Cream $12

I hope you enjoyed my list!

Have any of you tried any of these deodorants!? I would love to hear your thoughts on them!

Must-Have Monday – MAC Cosmetics Cleanse Off Oil

MAC Cleanse Off OilI decided start a new series on my blog – Must-Have Monday! Whenever I have a new must-have product to rave about I will include it on my Monday posting! Well why Monday, you may ask? Well usually Monday is the day you have to go back to work or school…drab right? Well my hope is that “Must-Have Monday” will brighten your day a bit:) It sure brightens mine!

My must-have product today is MAC Cosmetics’ Cleanse Off Oil. Now this product has been around for ages, but to my surprise not many people have heard about it. This product has been a staple in my bathroom cabinet for a few years now. Well what is so great about this product? This product removes all of your makeup gently, leaving your skin refreshed and clean. I wear full coverage foundation, waterproof mascara (a few coats) and waterproof eyeliner. Sounds like a pain to take off right? Not with this product. I use 1 pump of this oil if I don’t have a full face of makeup on and 2 pumps if I do have full makeup on and massage it in to my skin. Immediately, all of my makeup starts breaking down. I then rinse off the oil and my smeared makeup and continue with my normal skincare regime. Awesome right?!

This product is formulated with oils of olive fruit, evening primrose and jojoba seeds. It is 100% mineral-oil free. It also conditions your skin while leaving it super soft and also protects your skin with Vitamin E.

This product can be bought at any MAC counter or online here. It retails for $31, but it is well worth it. The product lasts me for a while and I use it everyday.

Have any of you tried this product before?! I would love to hear your thoughts.

Review – Pressed Juicery Cleanse

pressed juiceryI have been wanting to do a cleanse for a while and have been researching different cleanses online. A few of my co-workers did a Pressed Juicery cleanse a few months back and had nothing but great things to say about it, so I decided what the heck…let’s try it out.

My boyfriend also wanted to do a cleanse so I thought it would be easier for the both of us to do it at the same time, just so we can encourage each other and not tempt each other by eating. He did a water cleanse (which is ABSOLUTELY CRAZY in my opinion) and I did the juicing cleanse through Pressed Juicery.

We started the cleanse on Monday 8/18 (we had our last meal on 8/17 around 9pm) and we ended our cleanse on Wednesday 8/20 11:59pm (we ate at 12AM). That means we fasted a full 72 hours (a little more if you include the fact that we had our last bite to eat at 9pm the day before).

Pressed Juicery offers 3 types of cleanses, each one ranging in the calorie intake. Cleanse 1 is recommended for first-timers and this is the one that I did. You can also choose to do your cleanse for 1, 3 or 5 days. I decided to do the 3 day cleanse for my first time. I went to the Pressed Juicery store in San Francisco the Sunday prior to my cleanse. I would recommend bringing a small cooler with you when picking up your cleanse, that way all your bottles stay nice and cold.

The 3-day Cleanse 1 came with a total of 24 bottles, total of 8 bottles per day.  Cleanse 1 comes with 2 greens, 2 roots, 1 citrus, 1 signature, a chlorophyll h20 and an aloe vera h20.  You drink this combination of drinks each day for the duration of your cleanse. Each category has a few different flavor combinations that you can choose from. For example, your have to chose 2 different flavors of greens. The shop has 7 different flavors of greens you can choose from, each being different. They also allow you to sample different flavors at the store, so you can taste it before choosing it for your cleanse. They give you the chlorophyll h20 to drink throughout the day. This is supposed to provide you with energy. The aloe vera h20 is given to you to take at night, before bed. This water helps your digestive tract. They also number each of your drinks so you know the order in which you are supposed to drink them in.

Here is what I chose for my cleanse and the order in which I drank them-

greens 3: kale, spinach, romaine, parsley, cucumber, celery, apple, lemon, ginger

roots 3: beet apple, lemon, ginger

roots 4: carrot, apple, ginger

citrus 4: cucumber, pineapple, lemon, coconut, h20 aloe vera

greens 4: cucumber, celery, watercress, lemon, ginger, cayenne

chocolate almond: almond, dates, cacao, sea salt, and filtered water

aloe vera h20

chlorophyll h20 – consume throughout the day.

Okay, so I am all set Sunday night. I decide to bring my mini cooler to work in order to have my drinks handy and cold at all times. You’re supposed to drink a bottle every 2 hours and also drink 6 bottles of water throughout the day.

Monday morning arrives and I start my first drink at 9AM, to my surprise I didn’t finish it until 10:45AM. I really miscalculated how long it takes to finish one bottle. For some reason I was thinking “okay…I’ll take my first drink at 9AM and then my 2nd one at 11AM and so forth…” but in reality I didn’t finish my first one until close to 11AM. I would say that I did learn my lesson. By the end of the day I had to finish 3 bottles before bed, which was a bit overwhelming. I am happy to say that on this day I felt good, not hungry, actually very satisfied.

Tuesday, I woke up feeling great. I wasn’t hungry and was actually looking forward to drinking the juices today. I already knew how each bottle tasted like and I was just ready to get it going. I stayed more on track on this day and drank the bottles at good intervals in order to not need to gulp down a few bottles before bed like the night before. On this day I wasn’t hungry at all until I got home from work. Around 5PM I started really craving food. I don’t know what it is…I started dreaming about chips, burgers, etc. I showered and that seem to help the hunger pains. I did fall asleep really early this night. I’m pretty sure it is because of the smaller amount of calories being consumed, but needless to say I slept really good.

Wednesday I woke up so-so. I was feeling great in the fact that yes, it’s finally the last day of the cleanse, but I also was a bit grumpy. I really, really missed food, but I was determined to get through the day. I didn’t talk much at work and really tried to stay focused by keeping myself busy. I was really tired and desperately wanted a nap on this day. The hardest part was when I got home, around dinnertime I got hungry, but showered and again, like the day before, showering helped a lot. I slept early again that night.

One thing I forgot to mention is that for all 3 days…you pee A LOT! I peed at least every hour and sometimes every 30 minutes until it was time for bed.

Needless to say, I FINISHED the cleanse and I am very happy that I did it. It was challenging, but I would have to say that it was well worth it. The next few days after the cleanse, you are supposed to eat light and eat soups, fruits and vegetables. I am happy to say that I do think my stomach shrunk a bit. I got full really fast and I also noticed that my skin was much more radiant that usual. Most importantly, I felt awesome, maybe that was in part because I was now eating, but I think it was because of the cleanse itself.

I love Pressed Juicery and would do this cleanse or one of the other cleanses again. Cleanses aren’t cheap, but then again eating healthy isn’t either. You just have to decide for yourself whether or not you are worth the investment, and yes you are worth itJ A big, huge plus is that the juices are actually good! I loved the ones that I picked out especially the chocolate almond signature drink. I could seriously drink that all day. I am planning to do another cleanse in November and hope to do one every 6 months thereafter.

Pressed Juicery has several stores in the Bay Area and in the Los Angeles area and you can pick up your cleanse there. For individuals that aren’t near a Pressed Juicery location, don’t worry you can order your cleanse online and they will ship all the bottles directly to your home. Check out the website –

Now, just to give you a few notes before ending this rather long post. If you are wondering if I lost weight, yes I did. I lost 6 pounds in 3 days, but the cleanse is not made to lose weight. You will instantly gain back the weight you lost once you start eating again. The cleanse is essentially a reset. If you want to diet or change your eating habits, a cleanse is a great way to jumpstart that. Also, the cleanse will help your hair, nails and skin and I also think it helps you focus and get you mentally on track (as far as eating habits go).

Have any of you tried a cleanse?! I would love to hear your thoughts.

Have you heard of Poshmark?

poshmarkIn an interview with The Wall Street Journal, the chief designer of California Closets, Ginny Snook Scott says that “Only about 20% of clothes in the average person’s closet are worn on a regular basis”.

With that said, have you heard of Poshmark?!

Poshmark is a great place to sell your old or new things such as clothing, shoes, jewelry, makeup, purses and etc. It is also a great place to find new things to replenish your closet with.

I discovered Poshmark from my sister and started my own closet in July 2012. At first, I would just browse around and look at other people’s closets. I remember my first purchase was these Jessica Simpson over the knee boots that I have been searching for everywhere, but were sold out in my size. I ended up finding them on Posh for $35! Score, right?! After my success with shopping closets on Poshmark, I started to post a few of my things to sell. Who would have known how many things I have in my closet that I don’t wear and even more surprisingly, how many things I have in my closet that still have the tags on it!

Poshmark is a great way to clear out your closet. You can post items in your closet and give it a description and an asking price. People can “like” your item and ask questions prior to purchasing. Once someone has purchased your item, Poshmark will send you a prepaid label for up to 5 lbs and all you need to do is mail it out and mark the item as shipped in your Poshmark profile. Once the package is received by the buyer, Poshmark will keep 20% of the sale price and give you the rest. You can either keep it in their “bank” that you can use to make purchases or you can have it transferred to your own bank account.

I would recommend all the ladies out there to give this a try. Sell some of the stuff in your closet that you know you will never wear and let it be someone else’s treasure. Better yet, make room for some awesome new stuff.

Download the Poshmark app and sign up with this code HRSXY and you will receive a $5 credit.

Protect your scalp from the Sun!

Seriously, do we you really need sunscreen for your scalp? The answer is YES YES YES! The scalp is the most overlooked place when it comes to applying sunscreen. The truth is…sunburn on your scalp is no joke. It is painful, uncomfortable and unsightly. Like sunburn on other areas of your body, your scalp will peel and become itchy, red and tender.  Sunburn can make your scalp very sensitive to water and other products that you would normally apply to your hair. Most importantly, your scalp is still susceptible to cancer so sunscreen is a definite must if you are going to be outdoors for an extended period of time.

Here are my top picks for sunscreen for your scalp. Most are made specifically for your scalp so it is perfect in that in won’t leave residue in your hair or make your hair uber oily and unruly.

Clarins Sun Care Oil Spray SPF 30 $35 – This product is free of Parabens, Sulfates and Phthalates. This sunscreen is very versatile and can be used on your hair and body. It is the perfect product to throw in your beach bag. The best thing about this product is that it is lightweight, dry oil and doesn’t leave that greasy after feel.

bareMINERALS SPF 30 Natural Sunscreen $12 – This sunscreen can also be used on your skin or scalp. I like this one because it is a powder. It is great to sweep on the middle of your crown. It is great for those who already have oily hair and is afraid to add more products. This product is also very blendable and the applicator makes it so easy to use on your hairline.

Banana Boat SPF 30 Quik Dry Sport Body & Scalp Sunblock $7 – This product is specifically made for those who play sports and will be outdoors for an extended period of time. It is sweat-proof, waterproof, rub-resistant and leaves no residue. This product also dries quickly and doesn’t leave a greasy feel. This one is uber affordable and can be picked up at your local drug store.

Shiseido Refreshing Sun Protection Spray SPF 16 $30 – I just love Shiseido products. This product is awesome. It is a very lightweight spray that protects against both UVA and UVB rays. The formula is very light and doesn’t leave a sticky feel. Best thing about this product is the ease of application. The bottle can be sprayed even when held upside down. How cool is that?

Bosley Healthy Hair Scalp Protect SPF 20 $32 – This product is designed specifically to protect your scalp. It is alcohol-free and the formula is very lightweight. It doesn’t leave your hair oily or leave a white film. It contains and LifeXtend Complex which is great for hair preservation, growth and restoration.

Nioxin System 2 Scalp Treatment $25 – – I love this product because it does wonders for your scalp while also providing sun protection. Nioxin is a brand known for helping those restore their hair and it also promotes hair growth. The scalp treatment is a volumizer meant for fine or thinning hair. It provides vitamins to the scalp while also leaving an SPF 15.

Dermatouch Sun Smart Hair and Scalp Shield $25 – This product is also designed specifically for your hair and scalp. It is natural and paraben-free and protects your scalp and hair from the sun while also making your hair healthier.

Remember your scalp also needs protection from the sun! I hope this list helps in giving you options for sun protection for your scalp.
